You charge it, you can see juice sloshing around, the light flashes when you puff — and still nothing comes out. Nine times out of ten this is a blocked airflow sensor, a coil that has dried out, or a draw that is too soft to trigger the device. Most fixes take under a minute and need no tools. Work through the quick checklist below in order, and only bin the device once you have ruled out the easy stuff.
The 60-second fix list (try these in order)

Before you do anything else, run through these six checks. They solve the overwhelming majority of "my vape won't hit" cases we see from customers.
- Charge it for 20 minutes. Since the June 2025 UK ban on single-use disposables, almost every "disposable" sold now is a rechargeable pod device. A flashing light often means a flat battery, not a dead vape.
- Clear the airflow holes. Pocket lint, condensation, or a sticker left on the base will block the sensor. Wipe the intake holes and the mouthpiece.
- Blow gently back through the mouthpiece. Like blowing out a candle — this clears condensation off the auto-draw sensor.
- Take a slower, firmer draw. Auto-draw sensors need a steady 2–3 second pull, about the effort of sipping a thick milkshake.
- Check for an airflow switch. Many bigger-puff pod devices have an airflow ring — fully closed means no vapour.
- Top up the e-liquid (refillables) or check it is not empty (prefilled). A near-empty pod gives a weak, harsh, or burnt pull long before the last drop.
Still nothing? The sections below diagnose each symptom properly.
Why is my vape lighting up but not hitting?

If the light works but no vapour comes out, the battery is fine — the problem is between the coil and the airflow. The LED only needs a trickle of power to flash, but the coil needs a much stronger current to actually vaporise liquid, so a half-dead battery can light up yet fail to fire properly. The three usual culprits are a blocked airflow sensor, a flooded or starved coil, and a draw that is too gentle to trigger the device.
Start by covering nothing and taking one slow, firm pull. If you hear gurgling, the coil is flooded — tip the device mouthpiece-down onto a tissue, tap it gently, and leave it a minute. If you get a dry, scratchy pull with no flavour, the wick is dry and needs to re-soak. Give it five minutes upright before trying again.
Why is my vape not hitting even though it's charged?
A fully charged vape that won't hit almost always points to the airflow sensor or the coil contact, not the battery. On prefilled pod devices, the most common cause is a sensor that hasn't registered your draw — usually because the intake holes are blocked or there is condensation inside. On refillable kits, it is more often a coil that isn't seated properly or has worn out.
Quick triage:
- Prefilled disposable or pod: clear the airflow holes, blow gently back through the mouthpiece to clear the sensor, then take a firmer draw.
- Refillable pod kit: remove the pod or coil, check it is pushed fully home, wipe the metal contacts and the battery connection with a dry cotton bud, and refit.
- Either type: if there is an airflow control ring, make sure it isn't fully closed.
If you have a refillable device with adjustable wattage, make sure you are firing within the coil's recommended range — too low and the coil never gets hot enough to produce vapour.
Why does my vape taste burnt instead of hitting properly?
A burnt taste means the wick is dry and the coil is scorching cotton instead of vaporising liquid. The fix depends on whether the coil is simply thirsty or genuinely dead. If you have only just hit it hard a few times, the wick has dried out and can recover. If the burnt taste is constant, the coil is cooked and no amount of resting will bring it back.
To recover a thirsty coil: stop puffing, check the liquid level, and let the device stand upright for 5–10 minutes so the wick re-soaks. On a fresh refillable coil, always prime it first — drip a few drops of fresh e-liquid onto the exposed cotton, fill the tank, and wait five minutes before the first pull.
The single biggest cause we see is chain vaping. Taking puff after puff with no pause empties the wick faster than liquid can refill it. Leave 10–15 seconds between draws and the burnt edge usually disappears. If the coil is already charred, though, it is done — fit a fresh coil or pod.
Disposable vape not hitting? Fix the auto-draw sensor first

On a prefilled disposable or pod, a no-hit fault is the auto-draw sensor about 80% of the time. These devices have no fire button — an internal sensor detects the air you pull and fires the coil. Block that airflow and the device simply won't respond.
- Check the intake holes on the base are not covered by your fingers, lint, or a factory sticker.
- Place the mouthpiece to your lips and blow out gently to push condensation off the sensor.
- Take a slow, firm 2–3 second draw — too soft won't trigger it, too hard floods it.
- Charge it for 20 minutes if it has a USB-C port. A weak battery often flashes but won't fire.
If a brand-new device still won't hit after all that, it may simply be faulty. Around 3–5% of devices have a defect out of the box — usually a disconnected coil or a dud sensor. That is not something you can fix, so contact your retailer for a replacement. We replace genuine DOA devices for our customers without quibble.
Refillable pod kit not hitting? Check the coil and priming
On a refillable pod kit, a no-hit or weak-hit fault is almost always the coil — either unprimed, badly seated, or worn out. New coils need priming or they burn instantly; old coils lose vapour and flavour as the cotton degrades.
Run through this:
- Seating: remove the pod, push the coil fully home, and click the pod back firmly. A coil a millimetre proud won't make contact.
- Contacts: wipe the gold contacts on the pod and the battery with a dry cotton bud — leaked liquid insulates them.
- Priming: on a new coil, drip liquid onto the cotton, fill, and rest five minutes.
- Age: if the coil has done a couple of weeks of daily use and tastes muted or burnt, replace it.
Brand-specific fixes: SKE Crystal, Elf Bar, Hayati and Lost Mary
The principles are the same across brands, but each of the big sellers has a quirk worth knowing. Here is what we tell customers most often.
| Device | Most common no-hit cause | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| SKE Crystal & Crystal Plus | Sensor condensation or a not-yet-compressed new pod | Blow gently back through the mouthpiece; on pod versions, press the new pod down firmly to spread liquid before first use |
| Elf Bar & Elfa pods | Chain vaping drying the wick; low liquid | Pause 10–15 seconds between puffs; check the liquid window before assuming it's faulty |
| Hayati Pro Ultra Plus | Flat battery (it's rechargeable) or pod not clicked in | Charge via USB-C; reseat the pod until it clicks; check the screen lights up |
| Lost Mary (BM6000, Nera) | Airflow ring fully closed or flat battery | Open the airflow dial; recharge; reseat any refillable pod |
Across all four, if you have refilled and rested the device and it still won't hit, the coil or pod is the limiting part — not the battery.
How do I stop my vape cutting out in future?

Most no-hit faults are preventable with three habits. Get these right and your device — and your coils — last noticeably longer.
- Pause between puffs. Ten to fifteen seconds lets the wick re-soak and stops burnt hits. Constant chain vaping is also why your disposable runs out faster than expected.
- Never run a pod dry. Refill or replace before the last few millilitres — a near-empty pod burns the wick.
- Charge before it dies completely. Topping up little and often is kinder to the battery than running it flat every time.
Store the device upright at room temperature too — a vape left in a cold car or a hot pocket will under-perform until it returns to normal temperature.
When should you stop troubleshooting and replace it?
Be honest with yourself about when a device is finished. If you have charged it, cleared the airflow, primed or refilled it, rested it, and reseated the coil — and it still won't hit — it is either a dead coil or a faulty device. Neither is worth more of your time.
Replace the coil or pod if flavour is muted or burnt. Replace the whole device if it is a sealed prefilled unit that has genuinely run out, or if a brand-new one is dead on arrival (contact your retailer first). If you find yourself fighting cheap disposables constantly, a refillable pod kit with replaceable coils is cheaper and far less hassle in the long run — though if you only vape occasionally, a simple prefilled device is still the easier choice.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my vape not hitting but the light comes on?
The battery has enough charge to flash the light but the coil isn't firing. Clear the airflow holes, blow gently back through the mouthpiece to reset the sensor, take a slower firmer draw, and charge it if it has a USB port.
Why is my disposable vape not hitting when it's new and fully charged?
Usually a blocked auto-draw sensor or a draw that's too soft. Clear the intake holes, blow back through the mouthpiece, and pull steadily for 2–3 seconds. If it still won't hit, around 3–5% of devices are faulty out of the box — ask your retailer for a replacement.
How do I fix a vape that tastes burnt?
Stop vaping immediately, check the liquid level, and rest the device upright for 5–10 minutes so the wick re-soaks. Pause longer between puffs. If the burnt taste continues, the coil is cooked and needs replacing.
Why is there no flavour or vapour even though my vape fires?
A dry or worn coil, thickened e-liquid in the cold, or a near-empty pod. Refill or replace the pod, warm the device in your hands for a minute, and prime new coils before use.
Can I fix a vape that won't hit without any tools?
Yes — the most effective fixes (clearing airflow, blowing back through the mouthpiece, resting the device, adjusting your draw, charging) need no tools at all. A dry cotton bud to clean the contacts is the only thing that helps for refillables.
The bottom line
A vape that won't hit is usually a 60-second fix: charge it, clear the airflow, reset the sensor, and rest a dry coil. If it still won't fire after that, the coil or pod is the limiting part — grab a replacement coil or pod and you're back in business.
