Prefilled pod kits are the closest thing to a disposable. You get a rechargeable battery and a sealed pod that arrives already filled. When the pod runs dry you click in a new one and keep the battery. There's nothing to fill and no coil to change. The catch is running cost, because you buy a whole new pod each time, and that works out dearer per ml than liquid from a bottle. See prefilled pod kits and replacement prefilled pods.

Big puff kits are prefilled kits built for heavier use, with puff counts on the box from 30,000 up to 100,000. UK rules still cap any pod or tank at 2ml of liquid, so those numbers come from the number of pods in the pack or the liquid supplied with the kit, not from one giant tank. Treat the puff count as the maker's estimate. Longer draws and higher power use liquid faster, so most people get fewer.

Refillable pod kits ask a bit more of you and cost the least to run. You fill an empty pod from a 10ml bottle and swap the pod, or its coil, when the taste starts to fade. For most people that's every week or two, sooner with very sweet liquids. In return you get the whole e-liquid range to choose from rather than one brand's pods. If you want no upkeep at all, start with a prefilled pod kit. If you vape a lot and hate running out, a big puff kit or a box of pods saves constant reordering. If you vape every day and want to keep costs down, a refillable is the one to learn.

Nic salts use a form of nicotine that feels smoother at higher strengths. They come in 10ml bottles, usually at 10mg or 20mg, and they're made for low-powered pod kits and mouth-to-lung vaping, the same style as a prefilled pod. If you've moved from a prefilled kit to a refillable one, nic salts will feel the most familiar. Freebase is the traditional form of nicotine. It has a sharper throat hit at the same strength, so people tend to use it lower, anywhere from 3mg to 18mg. It's usually a 50/50 mix of PG and VG and suits starter kits and pen-style devices. You'll find it under 50/50 e-liquids.

Shortfills are bigger bottles of nicotine-free liquid, usually 50ml or 100ml, with room left at the top. UK rules limit nicotine refill bottles to 10ml, so if you want nicotine you add a nicotine shot yourself. One 18mg shot in a 50ml shortfill makes 60ml at about 3mg. Two shots in a 100ml bottle makes 120ml at about 3mg. Shortfills are mostly high VG, for sub-ohm kits that make bigger clouds. Shop 50ml or 100ml shortfills.

For strength, go by how you vape now. If a 20mg prefilled pod has felt right, a 20mg nic salt in a refillable pod kit will feel about the same. If 20mg feels harsh, or you're vaping less than you used to, try 10mg. Freebase users on a starter kit often sit between 6mg and 12mg. Sub-ohm vapers usually stay at 3mg or below, because each puff pulls in far more vapour.

Match the liquid to the coil, too. Coils rated above 1.0 ohm are made for nic salts and 50/50. Sub-ohm coils, below 1.0 ohm, are made for high-VG shortfills. Put thin liquid in a sub-ohm coil and it tends to leak; put thick liquid in a high-resistance coil and you'll get dry, weak hits. Sweet and dessert flavours wear coils out faster, so keep a spare from our replacement coils.
